Medicine in ancient Rome was predictably derived from their knowledge of prevailing Greek practice, and mostly herbal. The remedies derived from fennel, rhubarb, gentian, birthwort, licorice and aloe were used for remedying everything from gastrointestinal conditions to childbirth and skin and joint conditions.

The Romans had medicines of different types, many of them herbal concoctions which were sometimes mixed with powdered bone or ash or even flower petals. The results of the most recent DNA findings of medicines from a shipwreck conclude that the ancients used a concoction of about a dozen medicinal herbs such as celery, alfalfa, wild onion, radish or cabbage, willow, aster, the common bean and nasturtium. These ingredients were compressed into tablets or pills, bound together with clay and zinc. It's unknown if these tablets were used externally for skin problems or if they were taken dissolved in water or wine for internal ailments.

Medicines that the Romans used were herbs, mixtures of herbs and the juices of certain plants. These were crushed and sometimes liquefied and mixed with wine. Pliny the Elder in his Natural History gives some of the concoctions that were used. Depending on the ailment, sometimes animal parts were included in the mixtures. Of course a sacrifice of a white dove was standard procedure for successful healing.
