While the Greeks believed in many gods, their day-to-day lives were not overly affected by their presence. The main thing described in the Homeric Epics wouldbe the concept of Xenia. Xenia is the idea that not only should one be hospitable to people, but rather take anyone in who asked, feed, bathe, and clothe them, and pledge a friendship to them. This was because the Greeks believed that the gods could become human and visit regular people at any time, so it was good to be very cautious and be nice to everyone. This eliminated the off-chance of being rude to an old beggar who turned out to rule the world. You don't want to be on Zeus's or Poseidon's bad side.
The ancient Greek religion was polytheism. It means that they believed in many gods. They believed that gods and goddesses were like humans, they could love, hate, argue, could be jealous and envious. They often punished people or each other. Sometimes wanted to get rid of each other. People thought that they lived on Mt Olympus and ate ambrosie, drank nectar and were immortal. They often intervened into people's lives. No Greek heroes could ignore them according to the Greek legends and myths.
