My French Fugate ancestors emigrated to the US around 1740 from Alsace-Lorraine. Although it seems to be generally believed the name's origin is French, some Italian and German Fugates claim it is native to their country(ies). Pronounciations I have heard, depending on where they now live: Few'-gate and Few-gay' (French); Few'-git (Germany); Foo-ga-tay and Foo-get-ee (Italian).

I found some evidence that these ancestors emigrated because of Protestant religious beliefs and they emigrated to UK and then ultimately to USA. The name is Alsatian as Fugitt, as well.
