Many new technologies were introduced in World War I. A few of the most significant were poisonous gases of various kinds utilized by both sides in the conflict; militarily effective aircraft, both fixed-wing and dirigible types; helmet-design; and armored fighting vehicles or, as the British dubbed them for secrecy purposes, "tanks".
Mechanized warfare, Tanks, also Airplanes.

Flamethrowers, trench mortars, poison gas, barbed wire, and submarines were first used effectively (though not necessarily invented during the conflict).

Actually, no. The British invented tanks around 1914; German efforts in tank development did not begin until the British Mark I was first deployed against the Germans in 1916.

Back to the original question: I'm going to answer assuming that the question refers to only technologies invented DURING or IMMEDIATELY BEFORE the First World War. That is, technologies which were invented no earlier than 1910, or, which could not be build or employed practically until WW1.

A short list of newly invented or first-practically-available technologies that were used in the First World War:

  • Airplanes
  • Tanks
  • Large-scale deployment of Poisonous chemical gases
  • Submarines
  • ASDIC (primitive SONAR)
  • Telephone
  • Aerial bombing (whether by plane of zeppelin )
  • Wireless (aka Radio) - primarily by naval forces
  • Lightweight mortar (aka Trench Mortar)
  • Flamethrower
  • amphibious assaults
  • small-unit assault tactics (in the modern sense)
  • indirect-fire artillery

Of these, only Submarines, Indirect-fire Artillery, and the Telephone/Wireless had huge impacts. More limited (but still significant) effects came from the Mortar, Flamethrower, and small-unit tactics. All the rest were either mostly ineffective and/or too technologically immature to have any real impact.

There are many technologies which are associated with the First World War, but were invented (or employed) well beforehand. Their association with WW1 comes due to WW1 being their first use where all combatants were able to effectively employ them in large numbers, thus having significant impact on the style of combat. A short list of these technologies follows:

  • machine guns
  • hand grenades
  • "modern" steel helmet
  • modern spying techniques and (most importantly) organization
  • barbed wire
  • nitrate-based smokeless explosives (for all sorts of ammunition)
  • radically more effective high explosives
  • the modern naval convoy system (for protection of merchant shipping)

WWI was the beginning of the naval battle between England and Germany and who could get the best battle fleets.

Germany was producing large amounts of high tech battle cruisers whereas England produced fewer yet more advanced models.

WWII the USA introduced the Aircraft carrier which to date is the most powerful weapon in the world.

So basically WWI introduced breakthrough naval technology.
