Current United States President Barack Obama is a member of the Democratic Party.
Barack Obama is a Democrat. By all accounts, he has always been a member of the Democratic party, beginning when he was first interested in politics.
Most objective journalists would say that President Obama is a centrist Democrat. He believes that government is not the problem, but that it is not always the magic answer ei…ther. Historically, Democrats have been aligned with working-class and middle class people, and the president has not changed that stance. Like most Democrats, he believes everyone (including the wealthiest 1%) should pay their fair share of taxes, and he believes there are times when the government can and should step in to improve the quality of life for ordinary Americans. Contrary to what his opponents claim, he does not believe in redistribution of wealth nor does he believe in socialism. Over all, he has governed very moderately on most issues, leaning slightly to the right on issues like national defense and foreign policy, and leaning slightly to the left on social issues like marriage equality and equal access to health care for women. Currently, because the Republican Party has moved so far to the right, the Democratic party has been striving to maintain a moderate and centrist position (similar to what President Bill Clinton did); for the most part, they have succeeded. But this has frustrated the Democrats' most liberal members, who wanted President Obama to move more to the left. Thus far, he has generally maintained moderate positions: taking gradual steps on economic and social issues and being very strong on defending America against terrorists. His agenda has often been stymied by his political opponents in congress, but his supporters would say he has still gotten a lot accomplished (health care reform, rescuing the American auto industry, keeping the economy from getting even worse, leading the mission to kill Osama Bin Laden, ending the war in Iraq, etc).
