Added: All immigrants had to pass certain medical health, physical, mental, and psychological exams AND have a firm destination in the US to which they were headed to be housed by a friend or family member or employer. If anyone failed the exams or did not have a destination to whch to go, they were returned to their country of origin - EVEN if it meant breaking up a family unit.

∙ 14y agoAn immigrant is a person who has matriculated into Another Country. A person who was rejected would not be considered an immigrant.
While exact records were not kept, it is believed that about 2% of those applying for entry into the United States were turned away at Ellis Island.
