The North Vietnamese Air Force was supplied with MiG17s (J5 versions) and MiG19s (J6 versions) from Communist China and MiG21s from the Soviet Union; these were all jets.

The South Vietnamese Air force was supplied by the US with T28 propeller driven trainers that were modified for attack work, and later the splended A1 Skyraider dive bomber, also a prop powered airplane. Towards the end of the war the South Viet AF was equipped with the F5 Freedom fighter jet.

We'll take it that this question is discounting helicopters (Rotor-Wing aircraft).

The longest serving (fixed-wing aircraft) of the Vietnam War was the USAF F-100 Super Sabre jet fighter/bomber; it served from 1961 thru 1971. It very well could be the longest serving fighter/bomber in US history...about 10 years of steady combat! Approximately 242 Super Sabres were lost in the war.

The F-4 Phantom II was probably used the most, and all branches (USAF, USN, and USMC/the US Army was not authorized fixed wing jet attack planes) used it. It's heavy usage is reflected in it's losses, nearly 800 Phantoms were lost in the Vietnam War.

The list would be far to long to name, as well over three dozen types of aircraft were used by both sides during the Vietnam War. However, heres some highlights:

1. The USAF F100 Super Sabre jet was America's longest "serving in combat" warplane; from 1961 to 1971.

2. The UH-1 Iroquois (Huey) was the most famous (and common) helicopter of the war.

3. The AH-1 Cobra was America's first purpose built "attack helicopter."

4. The C47 Puff the Magic Dragon was America's first aerial gunship.

5. The B52 was used for the first time in combat.

6. The first mission(s) for the famed SR71 Blackbird were over North Vietnam.

7. The last American Aces of the 20th century flew the F4 Phantom in Vietnam.

8. The F105 Thunderchief was the only warplane in US history to be pulled out of combat due to excessive loss rates (nearly 50% destroyed).

9. The last war fought by a "primary guns only" jet fighter, the F8 Crusader.

10. The last war fought by a US Army artillery observation airplane; the O-1 Bird Dog. The airplane was replaced by the helicopter (OH-6 Cayuse). The O-2 Skymaster and OV-10 Bronco also spotted for the Arty, but those were transitional operations; the chopper was here to stay.

It depends on the airplanes role. If it was close air support the marines flew A-1H Skyraider. The Army flew C-47s, C-130s. If it was a bombing role it then depended on if it was Air Force or Navy. Air force flew F-4 Phantoms in various configurations, B-52 heavy bombers, or F-111 fighter/bombers. The Navy flew F-4 Phantoms in various configurations, A-4 Skyhawks, A-6 Intruders, E-2 Hawkeye, F-8 Crusader and may others but those are the most popular.

Also to note that in the spying business the U-2 and the SR-71 Blackbirds were flying constant mission throughout the 50s, 60s, and the 70s.

This is no means a complete list just the ones I can name off memory.

How popular is Vietnam?

The Vietnam War was a headache and even Hollywood was taking a gamble when it made a film about it. Even the term Vietnam War is not often used. To this day, the term "Vietnam War" is called "Conflict" or "Vietnam Era." The Vietnam War is something the US military, Hollywood, Book Publishing Companies, Toy Manufacturing Companies, etc. try to avoid. Names such as "Modern Era" or "Modern Era War Planes", or "Modern Era Tanks" will be used in lieu of "Vietnam War Planes", etc. America wants to forget the Vietnam War; which is why Jan Scruggs had the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall built in 1982...his idea was, "OK America, you can forget about the war...but not the men you sent to fight it!" The Vietnam War was popular during the war, ONLY in that it had to be reported by the news and the news media, magazines, and by the military in order to replace or repair the machines needed to fight the war.
