There are many plants that are safe and good for rabbits to eat, and many plants that aren't. No list of rabbit-safe plants is complete, so rabbit owners should become accustomed to researching specific plants before they give them to their rabbits.

The most important plant for pet rabbits is grass hay (like timothy). This should be the biggest part of your bunny's diet.

Other than hay, most of the plants you give your pet bunny should be fresh, dark, leafy green vegetables. Non-leafy plants (vegetables, fruit) are fine as a treat, but too much will make your bunny sick. Rabbits can also eat flowers and twigs. See the related questions below for more info and links about a healthy rabbit diet.

There are many plants (or parts of plants) that are poisonous for rabbits! Always search each online for confirmation that it's rabbit-safe before giving any plant to your bunny. If you aren't sure about something, better safe than sorry: avoid it! See the related link below for a list of dangerous plants.

When you're introducing a new plant to your bunny, be very careful. Stick to one new plant at a time so if your bunny gets sick, you know what caused it. Start with only a few bites one day, and watch for signs of illness. Be prepared to bring your bunny to the vet if she gets sick! If she doesn't, then the next day you can try a few more bites, and so on. See the related questions below for info about rabbit sickness and vets.

Greens Good in a daily salad -- approx. 1-3 packed cups daily for a 6 pound rabbit. Don't give too much lettuce: it can lead to diarrhea.

• Carrot tops

• Celery leaves (dark ones only)

• Chicory lettuces: like escarole, endive (the green kind, not Belgian), frisee, radicchio

• Dandelion leaves

• Kale

• Kohlrabi tops

• Parsley

• Spinach

• Berry leaves

• Watercress (and any other cress)

• Mint

• Rosemary

• Sage

• Thyme

• Romaine lettuce

• Basil

• Chervil

• Cilantro

• Radish tops

• Dill

• Fennel tops

• Oregano

• Red/Green leaf lettuce

• Arugula (aka rocket)

• Broccoli leaves

• Bok choy, Yu choy

• Collard greens

• Mustard greens

• Rapini (aka broccoli rabe)

• Turnip tops

• Beet tops, chard

• Cucumber leaves

• Cruciferous veggies: Be careful with these because these can cause gas in rabbits. Gas can be deadly, so if your bunny gets gas easily, avoid them entirely; otherwise, feed them in moderation.

Treats A bite or two is enough! Fresh fruit only. Always remove the pit if there is one!

Artichokes (fresh only!)

• Brussel Sprouts

• Cauliflower (be careful: can cause gas)

• Carrots

• Corn on the cob, Maize / Disagreement: fresh corn is not easily digestible by rabbits and can lead to gut impaction, GI stasis, and death!

• Kohlrabi

• Celery (be careful: cut into chunks, because the strings can get wrapped around the teeth and cause serious problems)

• Apricot

• Asparagus

• Banana (remove skin)

• Beets

• Bell pepper (be careful: can cause gas)

• Berries, like strawberry, blackberry, raspberry

• Broccoli

• Cabbages (be careful: can cause gas)

• Celeriac

• Cherries (remember to remove the pit!)

• Clover

• Cucumber

• Horseradish (fresh only, and be careful: can cause gas)

• Currants

• Edible pea pods (like snow peas)

• Fennel

• Grapes

• Kiwi

Jerusalem artichoke

• Mango

• Melon

• Lucerne (aka alfalfa)

• Apple (remove seeds: they're poisonous)

• Nectarine

Okra

• Orange

• Papaya

• Parsnip

• Pea leaves

• Peach

• Pear

• Persimmon

• Pineapple (remove skin)

• Plum

• Prickly pear (remove skin)

• Pumpkin

• Rutabaga (aka swede)

• Tomato (fruit only: all other plant parts toxic!)

Wild & Garden Plants Make sure these are pesticide-free and not covered in pollution (like car exhaust). Follow same rules as above: leafy greens are best; non-leafy parts are only good as a treat -- except that twigs are a good fiber supplement, so your bunny can eat as much as they want!

Double-check these against the list of poisonous plants below, they might be bad suggestions!

Rabbits love vegetables and fruit. However, pellets and Timothy hay (found at most pet stores) should be given to rabbits to maintain good fiber and protein levels.

Many leafy vegetables (including lettuce and cabbage) can cause digestive problems in rabbits. For a complete list of what to avoid feeding rabbits, visit the following link below.
