The Whig Party was formed in the winter of 1833--1834 by former National Republicans such as Henry Clay and John Quincy Adams, and by Southern States Rights supporters such a Willie P. Mangum. Many southerners, who hated Jackson's power grabs and stance during the nullification crisis, supported the new party, as did many Anti-Masons. In its early form, the Whig Party was united only by opposition to the policies of President Andrew Jackson, especially his removal of the deposits from the Bank of the United States without the consent of Congress. The Whigs pledged themselves to Congressional supremacy, as opposed to "King Andrew's" executive actions such as the bank veto and his veto of a funding bill for a state highway in KY.

What political party had control over the US government in 1840?

The Jacksonian Democrats and the Whig Party both struggled for power in United States during this time period. The Jacksonian Democrats were very similar to modern day Democrats. Andrew Jackson, President at the time, was leader of the Democratic Party while Henry Clay was the leader of the Whig Party. The two parties struggled until the Whig part collapsed in the early 1850's.

What political party does the leader of the opposition represent?

That depends. The party in power right now (2013) is the Democrats. Barack Obama is the leader of the Democrats. And as a result, the Republicans are the opposition party. Conversely, in 2000, George W. Bush got elected president. He was a Republican and thus, the leader of the Republican party. Because a Republican was president, it was now the Democrats who were the opposition party. So, the leader of the opposition is the man or woman who is considered to be in charge of the political party that is NOT in power.Sometimes, that extends to the senate or the house of representatives: whichever political party won the majority of the seats during the most recent election, the Speaker of the House is from that party; and the opposition is the leader of the minority party. In 2013, the Republicans are in charge in the House, so John Boehner (pronounced BAY-ner) is the Speaker. His opposition comes from the leader of the Democrats in the House, currently Nancy Pelosi. But in the Senate, it's a different story. The majority in the senate are the Democrats, led by Harry Reid. And the Republicans, led by Mitch McConnell, are the opposition party.

In the 1830s a political party arose that opposed to the jacksonian democrats who were they?

The Whig Party. While the Whig Party generally was "for" actions that expanded the idea of a nation, especially growing the west - Lincoln was a Whig before he was a Republican - the party really rose as a counter to Andrew Jackson. The Whigs had two presidential candidates elected as President - Wm Henry Harrison and Zachary Taylor. So it's safe to say running for President as a Whig and winning, was hazardous to one's health. The Whigs eventually wore out in the 1850's and were replaced with Republicans as the dominant opposition party to Democrats.
