When US President Abraham Lincoln took office in March of 1861, he lead a disunited nation with regards to waging a war to bring the rebelling Southern states back into the Union. Politically it can be said that there were three groups of views on the coming US Civil War. The first influential group were members of his own Republican Party. The radical wing of the party had many abolitionists in it and saw slavery as a institution that had to be ended. They wanted an aggressive effort to bring the rebelling Southern states to return to the Union and to have slavery abolished almost immediately. This Lincoln could not ignore as it was their help that won him the presidency. A large group of "middle of the road types" wanted to keep the Union together for patriotic reasons. A united Union was their preference, and the slavery issue could be addressed later. A third group of people did not wish to have an armed conflict to bring the rebels back. Their attitude was to let "them" go.
