So not sure if this is correct - and I would really like an answer to this question myself, but I believe it refers to the priest's main focus. Pastoral I think is being concerned mainly with the immediate church family and immediate community. In contrast, ecumenical means they are not just concerned with the local church but more concerned about Christians all over the world. I would love to know what the main focus of an administrative style of priest is if any one knows the answer.
Roman Catholic AnswerThere is no "pastoral" priest, as such, in the Catholic Church. There is a pastor, which is a priest who is in charge of a parish. All the other priests assigned to that parish would be assistants or associates, but one priest is placed in charge by the bishop and has canonical responsibility for the welfare of the souls in his parish, that would be the pastor. We have the Parish priest. The parish priest is helped by a parochial vicar (formerly known as a curate or an assistant pastor) and/or a permanent deacon, religious sister, or lay parishioners all known as pastoral associates.
The term 'pastor' means a pastoral worker - one who takes a role of pastorally caring for those around him or her. However, in a church setting, the term 'pastor' isusually reserved for the leader of a church - especially a Protestant church - usually a Baptist or Free Church - the quivalent of a vicar in an Anglican Church or parish priest in a Catholic church. Therefore Pastors are usually ordained, wear clerical collars, and are regarded as the church leaders of their churches, and as such have a 'pastoral role' in caring for those in their church, although this is just one of several duties that a church leader would have as pastor. However a pastoral worker is someone who specifically does pastoral work and nothing else, and is usually not ordained.
No, only a priest can say Mass. An Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist could, with pastoral permission, hold a Communion Service and distribute hosts that were previously consecrated by a priest.
A priest performs the sacraments (Mysteries) of the Church, and he also does pastoral work, such as visiting the sick, the prisoners, the widows, plus counselling and many many other duties.
