∙ 11y agoLots. His family made a few enemies, there were more than a few people in more than one country that were not on his side. His Dad was a a bit of a hard...er a hard person, not always the most supportive, Leif had to make his own mark.
That included money. How was Leif to get money? He ended up going to Norway, talking to a King, finding a new God that had more money. Wasn't easy.
Then he had to really stand out. How was he to do that? His Dad freakin' discovered and settled a new land, made Vikings indigenous to Greenland. Doesn't get much bigger than that.
So when Leif heard of people seeing a new land, he bought a boat. It wasn't cheap. neither was the crew that had seen this new land.
So Leif had already faced many obstacles long before he set off. On the trip he face storms, and shallows, crew problems and ship issues but he had to succeed.
He faced them, overcame them and we talk about him today.

Why did amundsen win the race?
He got to the South Pole first because he had a huge head start (about two weeks) he had also planned the location of his base camp so it was suitable for his team. The team had assembled a small wooden hut (called Fram) so they would be comfortable in the base camp during the really cold winters. Amundsen also planned his journey months before he actually started. He laid three depots before the journey started, to reduce the amount of supplies he and his team would have to carry. He used dogs to pull the sleds, they skied and took a shorter route than did the Englishman, Captain Scott. Amundsen also made sure he took the most direct route no matter what they had to face.
