  • No real executive branch
  • No real judicial branch
  • No way to raise an army or navy (this is one of the primary concerns when Shay's Rebellion occurs, a small group of people upset with the government could essentially overthrow it).
  • No universal coinage (each state had their own currency)
  • Flawed interstate commerce
  • Flawed foreign policy
  • No way to tax (once again very important because the US had just come out of war and had no way to fund it).

Well first off the government had no money for war and such because they couldn't tax the people. They had a monthly payment for every state, but the government had no way to enforce that law, being there was no judical branch established yet

The Articles of Confederation worked okay during war time but not in peace time. The national government did not have the power to raise taxes or keep a standing army.

Why was the Articles of Confederation not working?

There were several flaws to the Articles of Confederation. There was no executive branch, meaning that there couldn't be a leader to guide the countryThere were 13 different currencies, which would be extremely difficult to trade with.Difficult to ally: In order for foreign countries to ally with the United States, they had to sign 13 treaties, from all the colonies. In order to amend the article, there had to be a unanimous vote.Optional taxation: Nobody wants to pay taxes, so they didn't. The government began to lose money and couldn't support itself.Weak central government: The federal government could not control the states as states were more powerful than the federal.
