John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was a devout Roman Catholic. He had devoted himself to Catholicism ever since his mother, Mabel Tolkien died in 1904 when he was only 12 years old. An example of this can be seen in his insistance that his wife Edith, an Anglican/Church of England convert to Catholicism and that their children be raised in it. He remained strong in his beliefs until his death.

Tolkien was himself a convert to Roman Catholicism. He was baptised into the Church of England in South Africa where he was born but after his mother returned to England and his father died, she and her children were received into the Catholic church. Their priest, Father Francis Morgan was the children's guardian after she died.

J. R. R. Tolkien was a strong Catholic, and some of the themes in the Lord of the Rings reflect that. However, in many interviews Tolkien denies direct allegorical influences and that it is not a religious text. A repeating theme in Lord of the Rings is the Garden of Eden symbol that is expressed in such "utopias" as the untouched shire and Lorien, with its counterpoint such as the mines of Moria or Mordor.

Although Tolkien was baptised in to the Anglican Church, his mother Mabel converted to Catholicism after her husband died and her young sons were received into and subsequently raised in the Roman Catholic church. After she died Tolkien and his brother had a Catholic priest as their guardian to ensure this. Tolkien remained a devout Catholic for the rest of his life and insisted his wife convert on their marriage. Tolkien's eldest son John became a priest.
