Political parties act as a voice for their members and supporters. They have four key functions in the democratic process. They select candidates, facilitate the governance of the nation and people, monitor the opposing party while it is in power and they mobilize the people.

Political parties are a way of bringing together people who stand on a common "platform" of beliefs in the direction(s) in which government should be headed.

Also, the two-party system in the U.S. effectively and greatly limits the number of times that the election of the President becomes solely up to wishes of the U.S. House of Representatives and the election of the Vice President becomes solely up to the wishes of the U.S. Senate due to the failure of a majority of the electoral college to agree on the winners. Of the 57 elections to date that happened only once per office. When the electoral college failed to pick a clear winner in the Presidential Election of 1824, all of the candidates were of the same political party (this was after the demise of the Federalist Party but before the creation of the Whig Party). The Senate did not need to pick the Vice President in 1825 because John C. Calhoun was the running mate of both John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson, thereby getting enough votes. However, they had to pick a Vice President about a decade later, in 1837, because not all of the electors who voted for Vice President Van Buren voted for his running mate, Richard Johnson. Not a lot of people are aware of that because there was little or no drama involved; Johnson fell only one vote short of the required absolute majority, and he was easily elected by the Senate.

Democratic parties come up with policy proposals and give people the opportunity to stand for electoral positions. Political parties also hold the government accountable to its people.

What role does great britain play in canada's government now?

None. Though many Canadians believe they or their government answers to British Royalty this is not true. Britain, their Royalty, their government has no active role to play in an Canadian government. Even our ceremonial roles do not need any British role or connection. We could hire an actor to play the role of our Queen or that of a Governor General and it would have the same effect.

What are the disadvantages of a minority government?

Theorists who disapprove of coalition governments believe that such governments have a tendency to be fractious and prone to disharmony. This is because coalitions would necessarily include different parties with differing beliefs and who, therefore, may not always agree on the correct path for governmental policy. Sometimes the results of an election are such that the coalitions which are mathematically most probable are ideologically unfeasible, such as in Flanders or Northern Ireland. A second difficulty might be the ability of minor parties to play "kingmaker" and, particularly in close elections, gain far more for their support than their vote would otherwise indicate. Additionally, existing, powerful parties can use their leverage in coalition to hinder the growth and formation of new parties by forming alliances without them.
