The moment magnitude scale, the Richter scale (which can only be used for low and moderate magnitude earthquakes less than 6.9) and the modified mercalli intensity scale are used to measure earthquakes.
The Modified Mercalli Intensity scale is used to measure the degree of ground shaking, damage and surface accelerations caused by an earthquake at a given point, the Richter Magnitude scale (can only be used for small and moderate magnitude earthquakes), and the Moment Magnitude scale are used to measure the amount of energy released by an earthquake and are derived based on the amplitude of seismic waves and the size of fault displacement / rupture zone cross sectional area and rock mass elastic properties respectively.
The Moment Magnitude Scale (MMS) was developed in the 1970s to replace the Richter scale. The Richter scale is now obsolete and only used by media agencies.
The Richter Scale and the Moment Scale.
The Moment Magnitude Scale is used by seismologists to rate the energy released by large earthquakes. The Richter Magnitude Scale is still used to make an initial estimate of the magnitude of large earthquakes (but is not ideal for this) and to derive the value for low and medium magnitude earthquakes as per it's original design.
Earthquake severity is measured using the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale.

ricter scale, not sure if that's how u spell it though that's how it sounds if u say it
