It depends what you will be using it for, for example, if you were using the laptop to do some video editing, then you would look at the size of the memory (RAM) so that you could smoothly run some HD footage (I dont see why anyone would buy a laptop for video editing to do SD). You would also have to look at the size of the HardDrive, you can get over 1 TB on a laptop which is big but can be expensive.

If you just wanted the laptop to talk to friend via FaceBook or MSN and do some webcam chats/video chats then you would just look for a simple machine capable of running the internet and wouldn't really need much RAM or a big HardDrive, if you also need it for college/school work then something decent but don't blow all your money on the next shiny thing shoved in your face look around and decide what you need.

If you really want to video edit I personally wouldn't buy a Mac unless my work required me so or to use one, but a Mac could be the right thing for you, some people even use them when they don't even do video editing.

Well that depends, there are actually 2 or 3 sub-markets within the laptop market. You need to decide what your usage will be and go from there.

Which are you?

A. Mobile computer: This user actually uses their laptop on their lap. They often use their computer in airplanes, trains, cars, in restaurants and waiting-rooms or lobbies. They don't often have somewhere to plug-in, and so battery life is key. The computer is almost always used exclusively for office-type applications or at the most playing a movie, high-performance isn't necessary. Since theyre always on the go, they want something small and light as well.

B. Portable desktop: This user just wants a computer they can take with them and setup wherever they need. More often than not, they use it in the same place (work), where there's always a plugin waiting so battery life isn't that big a deal. This user is often also more interested in performance for games or other heavy processing chores and so CPU speed and graphics are key. Since it will most likely be used on desks or tables, and when its carried, only for short distances, size and weight are not that big a deal.

C. Ultra-portable: This user uses their computer while standing or walking. Ultra-portable computers are great for someone who needs to enter data while on the field. They need to be able to stand & walk around & talk to clients all while having their data at their fingertips. Size, battery life, and weight are key above all else here. Performance is a distant concern as any real processing will be done later at the office (or on their B. portable desktop)

There are excellent laptops for each of these users, but there is no one laptop which will suit them all. And so careful consideration must be made about what the computers purpose will be and what tasks it will need to be able to perform.

For the A. crowd, look for a machine at the same time is small enough that you can use it sitting in a car, but big enough that the keyboard isn't difficult to use. Usually these folks opt for a 15" display so they can watch movies, but still arent encumbered by a huge computer. Many find 12" laptops more suitable for this usage as they are easier to fit in a bag.

The B crowd often opts for a notebook with a 17" screen, not just for the extra screen space, but also because laptops in this class are usually equipped with more powerful CPUs and GPUs than others. It is not uncommon, for example, for these computers to use desktop processors. As a result battery life is often well under 2 hours.

The C crowd have a ton of options to choose from. Tablet PC's are very handy for this group. They usually have all the power and options of the A. group, plus a touchscreen/stylus input system. Many tablets can also be converted into a regular laptop by simply swiviling the screen 180 degrees. There are also "palmtop" computers such as the palm pilot, the handsping & such, these are generally very low power CPU-wise but are small enough to fit in a shirt pocket.

A good laptop would be one that holds at least 3GB of memory and an Intel Processor that is considered dual core. You also want to make sure that the laptop produces good sound and is capable of playing good videos, especially if you want to play lots of games. This means that the laptop should also have at least 256MB of RAM.

Small laptops are becoming more and more popular, mainly due to their size and weight (which both make their portability very appealing). They're ideal for internet use while on the go, but many people have also used them for primary computing. If you're looking into buying a small laptop, it would be helpful to know some of the qualities you should be looking for in it. The last thing you want to do is invest in the wrong machine that will end up being more counterproductive than anything.

One of the main qualities you should be looking for in a small laptop is powerful cooling. Even though small laptops are tiny in size and they might not be used for powerful computing tasks, it's important to remember that they are still full-blown computers and they carry the same parts that full size computers do. Due to being small in size compared to regular laptops, the hardware inside of the machine is more close together than normal, creating more heat. Laptops and computers come equipped with fans to keep the inside (and particularly the processor) cool, but if the fan isn't doing its job for the small laptop, your internal hardware could become damaged or ruined due to heat. Make sure the fan is optimal for the size, and check reviews on the specific model of laptop you're looking at. You might be surprised as to what you'll find.

You'll also want to pay attention to the maximum screen resolution available for the laptop you're looking at. Small laptops also have small screens, which means the work you'll be doing on the machine could be limited. For example, if you plan to work with graphics or spreadsheets (projects that require your attention to every detail), you'll need the screen resolution to be as high as possible.

Lastly, look for a small laptop with a large keyboard if you've got bigger hands. Small laptops typically come with small keyboards because of the size of the whole machine, but if you can, try to find something with a bit bigger of a keyboard to satisfy the size of your hands. If you pay attention to qualities like these when searching for the perfect small laptop, you should find something perfect for you!

When looking to buy a laptop, consumers should take into account customer reviews, prices, and warranty options. Other factors to consider is what one would primarily use a laptop for.
