Carry your craft around the dam
you should get off the water as early as possible before you get too close, and carefully inspect the dam, see if there are any potential ways down, either "running" it in your kayak, or portaging (walking) around it. note that many dams are very dangerous and also illegal to run. depending on the size etc
There should be water barriers that prevent any water craft from getting to close to a dam. In either case it's best to stay well clear of any dam edges and/or towers. You can see it getting closer obviously so turn back.
Paddle to the side, beach the water craft and take a look at the dam. Yo may want to walk your craft around the dam or you may be able to paddle through.
Slow down, and duck!
Turn around and row the other way.

When a paddler is approaching unfamiliar rapids, the paddler should head towards shore. This will give him, or her a safe place from which to check out the rapids to ensure that they are able to be safely crossed.
