If you get hit it the head so hard it almost knocks you out cold, Call (or have a friend call) 911 right away.
If you get hit in the head hard and the pain lasts for a while but goes away later with only a bump, go to a doctor later in the day as soon as possible. And don't take a nap or go to bed until that checkup has been made. (You know that song, "Its raining its pouring an old man is snoring. Bumped his head, went to bed, and didn't wake up in the morning." ?)

Apply an ice pack the the area to reduce swelling. If the scalp has been cut, apply direct pressure and seek medical attention if the bleeding does not stop. In the absence of bleeding, seek medical attention right away for any of the following:
1. If you black out or lose consciousness....even for a few seconds.
2. If you experience blurred or partial vision in one or both eyes.
3. If you vomit.
4. If you have trouble with speech, balance, or you can't remember the event.
5. If you are dizzy and/or nauseated.
6. If you become drowsy quickly. Do not go to sleep.
7. If you develop a severe headache.
Mark the event on your calendar or phone calendar app.; if any vague symptoms beyond the 3-4 day window develop, your health care provider can help you determine if the symptoms are related to bumping your head, or if they are unrelated.
Most bumps on the head are harmless, however, signs of a concussion or more serious injury can take up to 3-4 days to appear. If you have any of the above symptoms at any time, see a doctor right away. If you are looking after a child or elderly person who has bumped their head, watch them closely and call a health care provider, even if nothing seems to be wrong. If they suggest that you bring in the person for an exam, do so.

Most bumps to the head can be treated at home with quiet activity, close observation, and any over- the- counter pain reliever that your health care provider or clinic has suggested for you. When in doubt, even in the absence of any complications, check it out! Call your health care provider if you have any questions or concerns...there are no stupid questions when it comes to head injuries, no matter how minor.
You should see a doctor, but if it you hit your head immediately ice it.
