Italy started the war in 1940 on the side of the Axis. As the war turned bad for Hitler and his followers, so too did the fortunes of Italy. Operation Torch (US landings in west Africa) was followed by the invasion of Sicily. This in turn led to the invasion of Italy proper and in June 44, Rome fell to the Allies. At this time, Italy dropped out of the Axis and became a participant in the Allies. But there were still the die hards fighting in northern Italy alongside of the Germans. So at this point, Italy was split. From the early thirties Italy was headed by a Fascist dictator Mussolini who was inspired bt Hitler and his ideologies. The majority of Italians were blindly devoted to their dictator and followed him without thinking about the consequences. As the war proceeded and British, Polish and American troops started to make inroads into Italy they began to realise the road they had been led down really was not the one they truly wished to follow. The citizens attempted to capture Mussolini and eventually after some interference from Germany managed to execute him with his mistress.

["their" not "there"] This is not correct; the Italians were allied to Germany & Japan in WW2 and just did what they were told, eventually being defeated on their own soil by the Brits & Americans.
