Muzzle loading guns must be loaded in parts though the end of the barrel. The method of igniting the gunpowder in a muzzle loader is different than modern guns in that it uses a primer cap or pan instead of hitting primer inside of a bullet shell. Muzzle loaders are neither center fire nor rim fire.

Rifle primers are generally not reccommended for muzzle loading firearms- the flame is not large enough to reliably ignite black powder or Pyrodex. Is there a 209 primer conversion kit available for the 870?
By 870 I assume you mean the Model 870 shotgun? If so, there would be no purpose for that type of conversion. Shotshell primers are of the 209 size. The 209 "conversion" is done with muzzle loaders. The idea is to replace the muzzle loader nipple (that holds the cap) with a conversion unit that uses the 209 shotshell primer to get more positive ignition of the black powder.

Even most muzzle loaders use a spring somewhere. The only ones I can think of offhand were a type of shotgun designed for covert operations, where it was essentially a two-piece rod (often disguised as a cane or umbrella), and it would be fired by pushing the rear section of the rod into the front section - this would push the firing pin forward, which would strike the primer.
Why won't muzzle loader ignite the primer?
because it's the firing pin that hits the back of the rounds casing which in turn ignites the primer to fire the round out. so maybe depending what fire arm you have as i have only fired a few different rifles you may need to check the firing pin is intact and working so stripping the fire arm down if you have a manual which you could easily acquire may be worth checking out. i don't know if this is of any help to you

I own a 2000 year Thunderhawk in stainless steel with a composite stock. I have given it a value of about $300 or so. I have a Westfield scope on it, and a 209 primer conversion kit installed ($45). I shoot .429 Speer bullets with Hornady .50 caliber sabot wads...I can make a smiley face at 50 yards and at 100 yards... watch out!Shawn Schofield
