In the beloved 1939 film version of 'The Wizard of Oz', the Ruby Red Slippers belonged to the Wicked Witch of the East. But they were given to Dorothy Gale as thanks for having killed the Witch albeit accidentally. The slippers had to fit the feet of actress Frances Ethel Gumm ka Judy Garland [June 10, 1922-June 22, 1969], who wore shoe size 5-6.

Five (5) is thought to be the total number of ruby red slippers from "The Wizard of Oz."

Specifically, one pair is known to have been bought for $15,000 from the auction of MGM Studios possessions in 1969. It is displayed at the Smithsonian as part of the Institution's permanent collection. Three private collectors hold one pair each. A fifth pair cannot be accounted for because it was stolen from the Judy Garland Museum in Minnesota.
