A good security officer should be..............
Properly prepared to come to work, with the eqipment needed to do the job, such as a pen, note book and wrist watch. Wearing a clean and pressed uniform, with a fresh shave and short haircut.
A good security officer should develop a mental list of things to do every shift, in addition to the standing orders that his employer has posted. Good record keeping, as well as proper phone manners are the mark of a good security officer.
Patrols or walk-thrus should NOT be done at the same time, every time. Vary the time, to catch intruders off -guard. Do it backwards, every once in a while to vary the pattern a bit. Carry binoculars to be able to see distances on a large property, or truck yard. A cell phone is also a good idea, to summon help if needed, but stay off it, otherwise. No visitors, no girlfriends, no phone calls to your Mumma. Act professionaly.
Bring food and water from home, don't depend on the food machines at the plant. What happens if they are out of order, YOU don't eat for the whole shift . Be prepared to get wet and cold, by having your own rain gear or cold weather parka, if you are not issued with them. Same thing with boots in snow areas. Use your senses of hearing, sight, smell, and touch as you patrol, both inside and outside the building. Never assume a door is locked, until you twist the knob. Never assume anything is OK, until you check it, personally.
Record in writting the events that happen during your shift and get the relief if there is one, to sign your report when they come in to work. Don't leave until you have been relieved.

I wouldn't be interested in a job as a security officer because it often involves working nights. Also, depending on what you are guarding, it could be a dangerous job. I suppose the pay is good, but not good enough for me to consider a career in security.

yes a security officer can carry handcuffs depending on his/her security agency or training but if you don't know how to use them properly or have not been trained then no you cant i have a security license in Florida and i carry them.
Who knows more a Ritz Carlton Hotel Security Supervisor or a Corrections officer who works in a college town?
Obviously a Ritz Carlton Supervisor is more knowledgeable then a College town Corrections Officer. I bet the Corrections Officer thinks a Guerrilla could beat a Polar Bear.

There are many things that you can do with your degree. The most obvious one would be join a police department. Your degree will allow you a higher starting pay the ability to move up faster. You could also find work with a security consulting company. Or you could work for a security company as a supervisor or security officer position. (This is not an all inclusive list)
