Northern and Central Italy have become very prosperous and the appalling poverty in the South (and in Sicily) has become much less. On the whole, income is more evenly distributed now. Italy has a much better education system now, and for most Italian kids there are now worthwhile opportunities. In saying this, I'm comparing the situation now with that in period c. 1900-50 rather than specifically with conditions in WW2. The influence of the Roman Catholic Church has declined.
