During the Shakespearean Era, playwrites and actors a like would use many different forms of special effects. For example:

-Glitter used for witchcraft

- Costume changes on stage

- Loud noises using absurd objects (such as trashcans, washboards, etc)

- temporary curtains to fall on stage for distraction

- mirrors to create reflections

- stilts to enlarge a characters body length

- actors coming down from the ceiling on trapezes

- actors coming up from under the stage through a trapdoor

- actual cannon fire (doing this burned down the Globe in 1613)

- trained animals (the bear in The Winter's Tale is thought to have been a real bear)

They could lower people from the roof (the god Jupiter does this in Cymbeline), or have them go under the stage (the ghost in Hamlet does this), or have them go through a hole in the stage (probably how they did graves in Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet). They fired off real cannons (this is how they set the original Globe on fire).

There was not much concern for stage effect in the plays of Shakespeare and his company. There was use of curtains though that made the appearance of more doors and entrances.

Well, they rather famously had actual cannons to simulate cannon fire. This is because the wadding from one of the cannons actually set the theatre on fire on June 29, 1613.
