pickup speedometer does not register from a cold start. Shifting lurches and then all evens out after about 30 mph
Either that, or the speedometer cable went bad.

I believe that 1995 was the last year for a conventional speedometer cable on a Ford Explorer , and then Ford went to an electronic speedometer with a vehicle speed sensor
When you cut the wires on your speed sensor there will be several of fax. The most notable affect will be the malfunction of your speedometer.
If it is a stock model speedometer, there is no speedometer cable. there is a sensor on the transmission which transmits signals in a wire to the speedometer assembly, which is on your dashboard. If you have a problem check the speed sensor, or the wiring to it. JOEDI
I don't believe it has one , the Ford Explorers 1996 and newer models don't have a conventional speedometer cable , they have an electronic speedometer and a vehicle speed sensor ( VSS )

DEPENDS ON WHAT YEAR. ON THE 1993 EDDIE BAUER 4WD - THE SPEED SENSOR IS PART OF THE SPEEDOMETER CABLE. THE SPEEDOMETER DRIVE GEAR GOES INTO THE TRANSMISSION DRIVEN GEAR (INSIDE TRANNY). THE SENSOR HAS AN ELECTRICAL CONNECTION THAT JUST PLUGS IN AT THE TOP.

I believe starting on the 1996 Explorer , it went to an electronic speedometer with a vehicle speed sensor ( VSS ) so it doesn't have a conventional speedometer cable
