an eating disorder usually starts when a person has body issues. They tend to think they are over weight, and want to shed pounds fast. Sometimes, the person really is over weight and has struggled with dieting, and they turn to starving themselves to look better and be healthy. it also has to do with wanting to fit in and be like celebrities.

An eating disorder will develop because of things such as feelings of inadequacy, feeling lack of control in their life, low self-esteem, distorted body image, depression, or the person could just be a narcissist looking for attention (that was a horrible thing to say I am sure, but nonetheless).

Sometimes as young as 10, but generally about 12-13 when girls feel the pressure to be as thin and beautiful as what they see on TV, movies, and in magazines. Society gives the view that unless you are a size 2 you are fat. A "plus size" model is anyone who wears over a size 6 and the young women who see this try to copy it. The average woman wears a 12-14 so this is an impossible goal for many young women to reach.

In BulimiaGirls.com recent survey the statistics showed the average age that bulimic subjects began to binge and purge was 17 and 6 months.
