Take the Uptown C train (of the A-C-E, the blue line) from 34th Street-Penn Station to 59th Street-Columbus Circle. You will get off at the southwest corner of the park.

Central Park runs south to north from 59th Street to 110th Street, and west to east from 8th Avenue/Central Park West (the portion of 8th Avenue that borders Central Park is called Central Park West) to 5th Avenue.

The portion of 59th Street that borders Central Park is called Central Park South, and the portion of 110th Street that borders the park is called Central Park North. But the portion of 5th Avenue that borders the park is NOT called Central Park East, for some reason.

Take the Uptown A or C (of the A-C-E, the blue line). These two trains run up and down Central Park West, which is the western border of Central Park. When you get off the train, the park will be right across the street.

DON'T take the E, because after 50th Street, the Egoes to Queens.

The A is an express train, and the C is a local train. The A goes from 42nd Street (Port Authority) ---> 59th Street-Columbus Circle ---> 125th Street ---> 145th Street ---> 168th Street ---> and so on. Meanwhile, Central Park runs south to north from 59th Street to 110th Street.

So, DON'T take the A unless you want to get off at the south end of the park, at 59th Street.

If you want to get off more towards the middle or the north end of the park, then take the C. The stops on the Ctrain are: 42nd ---> 50th ---> 59th-Columbus Circle ---> 72nd ---> 81st-Natural History Museum ---> 86th ---> 96th ---> 103rd ---> 110th ---> 116th ---> 125th ---> 135th ---> 145th ---> 155th ---> 163rd ---> 168th (last stop).

So, on the Uptown C train, you can get off at 59th, 72nd, 81st, 86th, 96th, 103rd, or 110th.

To get back, you just take the same train (A or C), but Downtown this time, instead of Uptown.

Take the Downtown C or E trains (of the A-C-E, the blue line), or the A late nights, from 34th Street-Penn Station to Spring Street (at Sixth Avenue). Sixth Avenue is at the western end of SoHo, and Spring Street runs through SoHo.

The simplest way would be to take the C or Etrains (of the A-C-E, the blue line) from 42nd Street-Port Authority Bus Terminal to Spring Street (at 6th Avenue). SoHo runs south/north from Canal Street to Houston Street, and west/east from Sullivan Street through Crosby Street. Sullivan Street is the next block east after 6th Avenue. So the Spring Street Station on the C and E is 1 block west of the western end of SoHo.

You could also take the N or R (of the N-R-Q-W, the yellow line) to Prince Street (at Broadway). This station is smack in the middle of SoHo.

You can get the N or R at the Times Square Station, at 42nd Street and 7th Avenue, 1 block east of the Port Authority Bus Terminal (42nd Street and 8th Avenue). You can exit the Port Authority and walk at street level to the Times Square Station.

Or, you can get on the subway at the 42nd Street-Port Authority Bus Terminal Station, and walk through the underground tunnel to the 42nd Street-Times Square Station. The two stations are connected by a tunnel so you can transfer between them without exiting the subway system.

It depends on where in the park you're coming from. If it's the south end, you can take the Downtown N or R trains (of the N-R-Q, the yellow line) from 5th-Avenue-59th Street (southeast corner of the park) or 57th Street (at 7th Avenue). Seventh Avenue is towards the middle of the park, and 57th Street is 2 blocks south of the park (59th Street/Central Park South). Take the N or R to Prince Street (at Broadway). This station is in the heart of SoHo.

If it's the north end of the park, you can take the Downtown 2 or 3 trains (of the 1-2-3, the red line) from 110th Street-Central Park North (at Lenox Avenue, towards the middle of the park) to 42nd Street-Times Square, and transfer there to the Downtown N or R to Prince Street.

If it's somewhere along Central Park West, you can take the Downtown B train (of the B-D-F-M, the orange line) from 103rd Street, 96th Street, 86th Street, 81st Street-Museum of Natural History, or 72nd Street. Take the Downtown B to 34th Street-Herald Square, and transfer there to the Downtown Nor R to Prince Street.

If the B isn't running (it doesn't run late nights and weekends), then take the C (of the A-C-E, the blue line). It stops at all the same stations on Central Park West as the B. Take the C to Spring Street (at 6th Avenue) and walk east. Spring Street runs through SoHo, but 6th Avenue is sort of the eastern border of SoHo.

If you're coming from the east side of the park, you can take the Downtown 6 train (of the 4-5-6, the dark green line) from Lexington Avenue. Lexington is 3 blocks east of 5th Avenue, which forms the eastern border of the park. You can take the Downtown 6 from 103rd Street, 96th Street, 86th Street, 77th Street, or 66th Street-Hunter College to 59th Street-Lexington Avenue, and transfer there to the Downtown N or R to Prince Street.

The Empire State Building is at 34th Street and 5th Avenue. Walk 1 block west on 34th Street to Herald Square (at the 3-way intersection of 34th Street, Broadway, and 6th Avenue).

You can take the Uptown N-R-Q (the yellow line) from 34th Street-Herald Square to 5th Avenue-59th Street (southeast corner of the park).

If you want to go further north in the park, you can take the Uptown N-R-Q to Lexington Avenue-59th Street, and transfer there to the Uptown 4 or 5 express trains (of the 4-5-6, the dark green line), 1 stop, to 86th Street (at Lexington Avenue), and then walk west from Lexington Avenue to the east side of the park (at 5th Avenue).

Or you can transfer to the 6 local train to any of the following stops on Lexington: 68th Street-Hunter College, 77th Street, 86th Street, 96th Street, 103rd Street, or 110th Street (north end of the park).

You can also take the Uptown B or D trains (of the B-D-F-M, the orange line) from 34th Street-Herald Square to 59th Street-Columbus Circle (southwest corner of the park).

If you're traveling on a weekday, you can also take the Bfurther north, to any of the following stops on Central Park West: 72nd Street, 81st Street-Museum of Natural History, 86th Street, 96th Street, 103rd Street, or 110th Street-Cathedral Parkway.

If you're traveling on the weekend (when the B doesn't run), you can transfer at 59th Street-Columbus Circle to the C train (of the A-C-E, the blue line) to any of the same stops on Central Park West.

Does the A train stop at the Port Authority Bus Terminal?

Yes, the A train stops at the Port Authority Bus Terminal. All three of the trains on the blue line (the A, the C and the E) stop at 42nd Street-Port Authority Bus Terminal. There is also an underground tunnel connecting the 42nd Street-Port Authority stop on the A-C-E line to the 42nd Street-Times Square Station (since the A-C-E runs up and down 8th Avenue, while the Times Square Station is at 7th Avenue), so you can walk underground from the 42nd Street-Port Authority Station to the 42nd Street-Times Square Station, without exiting the subway system.
