The main thing is to be there for that person and that means you may possibly be 'on call' at all hours of the day or night. Let the person cry, get angry, swear if they want, or just hug them close and tell them everything will work out because it will. A breakdown or a breakup of a relationship is like grieving for a person you love that has died. In ways it is a death ... a death of a relationship that this person held dear to their heart. Sometimes love can be cruel, but I feel there is always a reason for it. When I look back on my own life and how heart broken I was over my first husband cheating on me I thought my heart would never mend, but with the help of family, friends and my own tenacity I managed to get over him and move on with my life. Eventually I met a wonderful man and I felt from the first time I met him I'd known him all my life. We have been married 36 years. I remind myself that if I hadn't gone through the pain I had with my first husband I would have lived a miserable existence with a cheating husband. Instead, it took some reality to slap me in the face and strength to move on. It was meant to be so I would be free to meet and marry the person I truly should be with. You may want to suggest some of things I've told you to your friend. They may be too broken hearted to listen or even care, but keep at it.
Try getting your friend out to clubs or some place fun and try to get them to laugh. Laughter is the best medicine.
You are truly a wonderful friend and this person is very lucky to have you on their side.
