∙ 11y agoAlways call your dentist and make an appointment to have the tooth or teeth checked out. Even if a chip seems minor, there may be additional cracking that needs to be repaired.
There are 4 kinds of tooth fractures:
1) chips to the outer enamel layer only
2) fracture to the dentin layer
3) fractures that go into the pulp of the tooth
4) fractures that go into the root (usually a vertical fracture)
For the first kind of fracture the tooth is usually just ground down slightly to smooth off the edge.
For the second kind, which causes sensitivity to cold & heat, a composite restoration is done to cover the sensitive dentin. It may need a crown or porcelain facing.
For the third kind either a composite restoration is done or a root canal. Seek attention on theseimmediatelyas bacteria can get into the pulp and cause nasty infections.
For the fourth kind of fracture, the tooth is typically removed. Seek attention immediately with this kind of crack.

∙ 12y agoI had the same problem recently with an upper molar and I went to the dentist. I had to have it pulled. I recommend going to the dentist as soon as possible. I was fine with the cracked tooth for a while but later I got extreme nerve pain. I recommend going to the dentist to have him see if it can be saved, or if they have to pull it as soon as possible. Hope everything works out for you :-)

∙ 10y agoThe best thing you can do is to go and see your dentist. Otherwise, depending on how it is cracked, it could become infected. You can also take some over the counter pain medication so that you feel better until you can see your dentist.

it is most likely the tooth had a small crack in it anyway. the tooth was alittle"high"from the new filling and the extra pressure from biting on it, cracked the tooth. usually after a new filling, you should go back to have the filling polished which strengthens the filling and adjusts the bite.

yes it happened to me my tooth was lying in a case and when i went to look at it it was cracked. I, too, have had this happen. All three of my children have shed their baby teeth, and all three have had at least one of them crack spontaneously. One of them cracked right in front of us.
