If you are the godparent of the baby, you should wear a nice day dress if you are a girl, and if you are a guy you should wear a suit whit tie. Because you will be on the photos and later on you don't want to look bad or poorly dressed. If you are just attending as a friend you should wear slacks, a nice dress pants, with a feminine, chic blouse, don't show a lot of skin, it's tacky. If you are a guy, also wear a nice dress pants and a dress shirt, no ties.

That depends on where you get baptized. Our church provides a baptismal robe to wear and towels. They baptize people immediately by full submersion when they come forward to become chrisians so they need something modest people can wear with no prior preparations. The blue robes zip up in the front and are made of a waterproof nylon/plastic material that doesn't cling to the body, and they have a jumpsuit type style that won't ride up in the water. My husband and I were baptized together a few years ago and I was happy with the modesty comfort and convenience. I am large busted so the last thing I need is a buch of wet fabric clinging to my upper body in front of a buch of people. Plus I guess I'm sentimental like the idea of having a special outfit to wear for a special and meaningful ceremony. The idea of getting baptized in jeans and a t shirt doesnt seem right, just like getting married or graduating in regular clothes wouldnt. While baptismal clothing varies, the robes we use would probably be among the most common you would see, especially if you go to a church that baptizes on the spot. Here is a video of a young lady being baptized in the exact type of robes we use.

This question has a rather subjective quality to it, and therefore may be subject to differing opinions on the subject. My answer also presumes the christening is within a Christian context, whether Catholic or Protestant.

A "Christening" or "Baptism" is an important event in the life of a family regardless of what denomination one belongs to. Therefore it is probably a prudent practice to wear clothing reflective of the fact that this is an important occasion. Clothing which reflects important events in the lives of a family are usually suits, or coat and tie, or at least shirt and tie. For women, whatever the female equivalent to a suit, or coat and tie is I think proper. Not being a women, I can't speak to what is considered formal dress.

Some people however, due to their financial situation or unique situation in life perhaps are not in a position to wear a suit, or coat and tie, etc. In such a case, it is probably prudent to wear the best clothing one has available to them.

For a baptism, something at least semi-formal is highly recommended. Something that is simple and understated is the most preferable dress for a baptism.
