Almost everyone wears Western-style clothing almost all the time. Some people wear traditional kimono for certain special events, and women do this much more than men do. In general, people when working dress more formally than in Western countries. Most men who work in offices wear suits, and uniforms are common for many jobs. Junior high and high school students wear uniforms in school and often out of school as well.

It depends on the area of Japan you are asking about. Tokyo (mainland) Japan is very flashy, over the top and colorful. Think like cartoon bikers. In lower Japan, they are more conservative with mostly greys, greens, and whites with accesories in bright colors. Layers are very popular. The men mostly wear tight-ish jeans or loose slack paired with t-shirts or button down shirts. Trucker hats are till very popular here.

Well like in America there are different types of styles.

To school they have their uniforms.

Some styles are decora, gothic lolita, Visual Kei, gyaru, ganguro. . . and many more.

Im not too sure either, but I do know that they wear kimonos and a summer kimonos (they have a special name) and pretty much anything\ casual clothes.

In summer festivals women wear Yukatas (Traditional Japanese dresses). Apart from that, they dress pretty much like anyone else in the world. They traditionally wear kimonos.

But modern Japanese clothes are similar to clothes we wear in america.

There are also clothes from China, South Korea, Tawain, etc.

In Japan "western" clothing is favored, Japanese people usually like to dress "in season".

-In the Autumn it's common to see rustic colors being worn.

-In the Winter darker clothing is in favor, people also dress in layers.

-In the Spring you might see brighter colors.

In Japan how do people typically dress? for special occasions?

Typical dress is mostly Westernized, with sometimes a penchant for extreme styles. (Think Lolita, Harajuku girls). People working generally dress more formally than in America, and most school-age children and teenagers wear uniforms to school. Kimono, or yukata in the summer, is worn on special occasions, such as New Years, festivals, coming-of-age, etc.

For formal occasions (weddings, graduations, etc.), men usually wear a black suit with a white shirt and a white tie. Womens dress-formal is also usually black (but other colours are worn too) - usually a dress and jacket. Some times women will wear kimono, though not often. Children and teenagers will generally wear their school uniform for formal occasions.

Kimono - or yukata in summer - are often worn for festivals (New Year, coming-of-age day, summer festivals, etc.) though more people just wear ordinary casual clothes.

for less-formal parties, business suits for the guys, dresses for the women.

For everyday wear, it depends on age, occupation, personal style and so on. Under 18's will probably spend most of their time in school uniform.

I guess some are influenced by Eastern dress or some are still traditional like kimono's or long dresses with belts and intricate patterns.
