I have cared for two wild mute swans for about 5 years now and feed them JJ's sweet feed. It's a blend of grains, wheat and corn that is actually a horse and cattle feed. A 50# bag at the local Agway store is just $10 and they eat about 5# a day at most so the cost is very minimal. Just $1 a day for such a great pleasure! The river is almost totally frozen over and as they need water, I break holes in the ice and put the food in and around the hole. They can reach down almost 3 feet with their long necks.

The main diet of swans consists of underwater stems, leaves, and roots, which they pull from the bottom of lakes, ponds or streams. They also eat any insects and small organisms that are attached to the plants.

They do eat aquatic vegetation but if you are feeding them, a grain mix of wheat and corn they will be very happy with! I feed mine JJ's sweet feed and buy it in 50# bags at the local co-op/Agway store. Our two swans eat 5# a day for a very minimal cost of just $1.00 a day. They do get a slice of whole wheat bread each once a week as a treat. DO NOT feed them moldy old bread. Mold is very harmful to them and they could die. I have heard that they like spinach and lettuce but mine will not touch either!
