Essentially what it boils down to is a system that will help you with the type of overall work you're doing and the programs required to achieve your goals for that project.
Mac or PC really doesn't matter anymore, though there are those on both sides who will swear by both. The top design programs are built for use with both Mac and PC, so in the end, what matters is your personal preference, software technical requirements (RAM, Video RAM, CPU, etc.), and of course, what you can afford.
In general, the best type of notebooks for top design programs are going to be those for gaming or high performance. This is because they are specifically built for high-end multimedia use and presentation, and if you compare the technical requirements for such programs, they line up very well with high performance systems, with a little extra for software updates as time passes.
Bottom line - for top performance, check the system requirements of the media design programs you wish to run, be it for graphics, sound, video, animation, etc., double the RAM and VRAM, and you'll be set with a system that should carry you through at least 3 software updates. Always get a system with 2 internal drives, never just one; a single drive severely limits performance when dealing with design programs (e.g., main drive being used as a scratch disk for large files).

∙ 15y agoContact the college. They will have a specific type and or model that may be required. They usually have some good prices for the machine and software as well. If you're going to study graphic design, I'd recommend a Macbook Pro, they are quite expensive but the best for graphic design.
If you don't have that kind of cash, an HP notebook is a good option. You will want to make sure you have one with lots of memory (RAM), has a fast processor, a decent size hard drive, and a big screen. I would recommend at least 2GB RAM, for better use switching between software as you will often be working with two or three programs at a time. At least 2 GHz, or equal processor, for faster use and better for when you have to do a lot of video editing also - it doesn't matter if it is Intel or AMD. At least a 17" display for more view space. Probably around 200 GB hard drive space, but it doesn't really matter because you could always get a pocket drive if you need more room. Also, I would recommend a decent graphics card other than the one that is built into the motherboard; this will make a lot of your tasks appear better and software to work better. You will probably have to burn a lot of your projects to either CD or DVD, so a combination CD/DVD writer would be good. This might cost you around $1,000 with taxes, unless the one you buy has even better specs. Most universities don't require a specific laptop, but they will require use of specific software - such as Adobe Creative Suite. A MacBook Pro would be ideal for a graphic design student.
