Dmitri Shostakovich wrote Classical Music, categorized as 20th Century classical music, although his compositions often display an affinity with the Romantic idiom as well. He is most famous for his instrumental music, both orchestral (including 15 symphonies and 2 each of piano, violin, and cello concertos) and chamber music (including his 15 string quartets; 2 piano sonatas; 2 trios for piano, violin, and cello; a quintet for piano and string quartet; and 1 each of violin, cello, and viola sonatas). However, before Soviet censorship caused him to avoid written libretti, Shostakovich also wrote 3 complete operas, including the infamous Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, which attracted official condemnation for "formalism" (emphasizing form over content, and inaccessible to the common Soviet people), a designation that would pursue Shostakovich's music throughout his life.
