The units of measurement are:

Length: metre (m)

mass: gram (g)

volume: litre (l)

These can be preceded by multipliers representing powers of 10:

10^6 = M = mega- eg 1 Mg = 1 × 10^6 g = 1,000,000 g

10^3 = k = kilo- eg 1 kg = 1 × 10^3 g = 1,000 g

10^2 = h = hect[o]- eg 1 ha = 1 × 10^2 are = 100 are.

10^1 = da = deka- eg 1 dam = 1 × 10 m = 10 m

10^0 = <no prefix> = base unit

10^-1 = d = deci- eg 1 dg = 1 × 10^-1 g = 0.1 g

10^-2 = c = centi- eg 1 cm = 1 × 10^-2 = 0.01 m

10^-3 = m = milli- eg 1 ml = 1 × 10^-3 = 0.001 l

10^-6 = µ = micro- eg 1 µg = = 1 × 10^-6 g = 0.000001 g

Areas of land are measured using the hectare which is 1 ha = 100 are (pronounced as "air"). 1 a = 100 m²; 1 ha = 10,000 m² which is approx 2.478 acres.

The current official version of the metric system, used all over the world, is called the SI. It probably has hundreds of units. There are seven base units: meter, kilogram, second, Ampère, mole, Kelvin, candela. Other units are derived from those; to give a simple example, since meter is the unit for length and second is the unit for time, speed is measured in meters / second.

What do you use to measure speed in the metric system?

You use exactly the same instruments to measure speed in the metric system as you use in any other system. For example, a speedometer, or a distance measuring device and a stopwatch. The difference is that these devices are calibrated in metric units, instead of old-fashioned units.

Why should you use the metric system in science?

Because the metric system uses units of 10's to measure which makes things simple.
