I think that it goes up in twos: 22" waist = Size 8 24" waist = Size 10 26" waist = Size 12 28" waist = Size 14 30" waist = Size 16 32" waist = Size 18 34" waist = Size 20 In my experience the UK shops vary greatly so I wouldn't rely on it. hope this helps
You need to be more specific.. Where is the dress from? Is it a US size 26 or an Australian 26 etc Im Australian, so with the research that I just did on the internet a dress size 26 is on average a waist size of about 45" (inches) Which is considered to be a plus size, if you're not talking plus sizes please let us know. The inch size for a dress size 26 varied from site to site but on average it was between a 44" to a 47" I guess it depends on the dress itself. Hope I was of some help =)

In her early career, her measurements are given on many websites as 36C-21-36, which is, in inches: bust, waist, hips. [1] Her waist was exceptional for her chest and hips; she had a 1950s hour glass figure (Think Dita Von Teese). I found here [2] that her waist was 19 inches! Her husband Richard Burton apparently said: "Her body was a true miracle of construction and the work of an engineer of genius." Such measurements would be hard to give a modern dress size. She would be size 8 based on her waist, but size 12-14 based on her bust and hips. [3] She was quite short 5'1"-3". So for someone of a taller frame such a waist would be unhealthy. But remember, it was her hour-glass figure that was so amazing, so for someone taller it would be the ratios that are important; not the measurements. Even as she grew older and was not so tiny in the waist she still had a great figure, but not skinny by modern standards. It was what she wore, not the size.

Mens waist sizes are simply womens sizes + 20. For example, Womens size 8 = Mens size 28 and Womens size 10 = Mens size 30. To answer the question, a mens waist size 36 is a womens size 16.
She said once that it was 20 inches.
