The Scriptures never mention Barabbas after Matthew 27, so we have no way of knowing what happened to him. There are some fictional accounts, at least one book and one movie about Barabbas, but these are not historical.

"Barabbas" is also never mentioned prior to the Gospels either.

"Barabbas" is not a proper name or surname per se', -any more so than is "Christ". It is what he was called. His name was "Jesus", written in the original Greek Gospel attributed or according to Matthew (27:17). Barabbas is an Aramaic appellation, the meaning of which is: Bar = Son + ABBA = Father ('Son of the Father'... as in the Father of us all, or, 'God' if you will).

Don't you think the Jews, as well as Pilate, knew that?

No Jew, during the reign of Pontius Pilate, ever knew, or saw, or even heard of "Christ". "Christ" is supposedly a translation of the Hebrew 'mashiach' (with added meaning) and, without etymological basis or foundation within the Greek language or custom (there is no such being or office in Greek history).

Despite Jesus Barabbas' portrayal (exclusively) in the Holy Gospels as being "a notorious robber, murderer and insurrectionist" (without evidence, much less proof), -he was incongruently "released from prison"... supposedly because Pilate exercised a "custom" (as never before or since utilized).

In order to truly know and understand the dilemma the Jews were in... one must needs know of the first king of the Jews... as well as the Jews rejection of Rehoboam (Solomon's son) and, perhaps more importantly: Saul of Tarsus' genealogy. Then, and only then, might it become clear as to why the Jews demanded the crucifixion of 'the descendant of David and the Jewish mashiach'.

The article in the link says that Barabbas was a Jewish freedom fighter against the Romans who had been arrested for taking part in an uprising, and that this was why he was popular with the crowd, which called for him to be released instead of Jesus. According to the article, after Barabbas was set free he went to the place of the crucifixion and watched as Jesus died on the cross. The article also says that he later took part in another revolt against the Romans and was killed during the fighting.

What does A D mean in dates?

The AD stands for After Death in reference to Jesus Christ. ie a date like 200 bc means 200 years before the birth of Jesus Christ, and 2000 ad means 2000 years after Jesus Christ`s death. AD is a Latin term "Anno Domini" meaning "the Year of Our Lord" and references Jesus' birth not his death. So 2000 a.d. means 2000 years after Jesus' birth not after his death. And 100 b.c. means 100 years before Jesus birth. So time was divided by the birth of Jesus alone not his birth and his death. Events are considered happening before his birth or after his birth. AD doesn't have anything to do with Jesus' death.

Who was Jesus Barabbas?

One viewAlthough written in the Holy Gospels exclusively, -described as "a notorious robber, murderer and insurrectionist" (without evidence, much less proof), He is otherwise unknown (but not unknowable).Written in the original Greek Gospel according or attributed to Matthew (27:17) He is named "Jesus", -"called Barabbas". (This is an indisputable fact.) His name (Jesus) was removed or omitted from the Latin translation of the same text (around 390 c.e.) and most of the subsequent translations thereafter, -leaving 'us' latter-day unsuspecting souls with only "Barabbas" instead.Barabbas is not a proper name or surname per se' (any more so than is "Christ"), -it is an Aramaic appellation (the indigenous language of the people), the meaning of which is: Bar = Son + Abba = Father ) as in 'the Father of us all' or 'God', if you will. Thus, we have, like it or not: Jesus Barabbas (the 'Son of God').Surely the chief priests and elders knew exactly what 'they' were saying when they demanded the release of [Jesus] "Barabbas", -'we' latter-day people, unfortunately, are drowning in a plethora of unknowing. One viewBarabbus was the thief who was released instead of Jesus on the day of christ's crucifixion.Barabbas is simply the latter part of the name 'Jesus bar-abas.' Jesus was not an uncommon name at the time and 'bar' is used to note that he is the 'son of Abas'. Many Jewish names still follow this pattern. The word 'abas' is not the same as the word for God the Father. Neither does it make sense that Pilate would ask which of the two prisoners to release if they are the same person!
