Edgar Allan Poe's father, David, abandoned his wife and children while Poe's mother Elizabeth was pregnant with her third child, Rosalie. Then, about a year later, Elizabeth died on December 8, 1811, Edgar (almost 3 years old) and Rosalie (about 1 year old) were probably with her when she died at the young age of 24. Poe's father had not completely disappeared, but he died around the same time. The three children (Henry, Edgar, and Rosalie) were taken in by three separate families. John and Frances Allan took in Edgar but did not formally adopt him.

  • Henry, Edgar, and Rosalie's parents, David, Jr. and Elizabeth Poe, both died when Edgar was almost three years old, and David had left the family much earlier.
  • Elizabeth was in Richmond, Virginia where her acting troupe was performing at the time she became ill.
  • An effort was made to find homes for the three children.
  • Henry went to live with his grandparents, Edgar was taken in by Mr. and Mrs. John Allan, and Rosalie was taken in by the Mackenzie family. The later two couples resided in Richmond, Virginia.

Edgar Allan Poe was adopted by John and Frances Allan after his parents died in 1811. John Allan was a successful merchant in Richmond, Virginia, and he had business dealings with Poe's father, which led to him taking in Poe as his foster son.

The familial relationship was that the Allans were Poe's foster parents. They did not adopt him. Frances Allan and Edgar had a loving relationship. John Allan was cold toward Poe, never wanting to take him in in the first place. John sent him to various schools and one year at the University of Virginia. John Allan did not approve of Poe's behavior there since Poe accumulated $2000.00 in gambling debts. He refused to pay Poe's debts and refused to pay any more tuition.

When Frances died in 1829, Poe and John reconciled for a time. After John remarried, they became estranged again. John Allan died and did not even mention Poe in his will.
