This is truly a matter of opinion. But one of his most recognized works is Moby Dick, which was published in 1851. When this was published, he did NOT become an instant success, but it is now considered one of the greatest literary works of all time. it wasn't until the after the Melville Revival in the early 20th century his works won awards. his famous book moby dick was hailed one of the literary masterpieces of both americal and world literature. he was the first American author to have his book published in the library of America.

It depends on how you classify it. If during his life then the answer is either Typee or Omoo, however from the perspective of today the answer is hands down Moby Dick
