During World War I, Adolf Hitler served in the German Army as a Gefreiter, or Private (NATO Rank Code OR-2). Gefreiter was the lowest rank for ordinary soldiers in the German Army.

According to his own memoirs 'Mein Kampf', he was permanently volunteering for the most dangerous missions, and few people dared to question these claims.

But new evidence has come out that he found excuses to spend most of his time at Headquarters, and that his Iron Cross was 'wangled' through well-placed contacts.
