John Brown was a militant abolitionist who tried to raid the national guard armory in Richmond, Virginia (I'm not positive about the details, and I'm kind of rushed now so I can't check them; anybody who knows better please correct this) in order to arm a slave uprising. He already had a very violent record of dealing with slave-owners/supporters in Bleeding Kansas. Ironically, his raid was stopped by a group of US federal marines under the command of none other than Robert E. Lee. Later on, he was tried and hanged for the raid. In the South, Brown was villified as a terrorist--which in my opinion he was--whereas in the North his execution made him into a martyr for the abolitionist cause. he and a small band of supporters attacked a small town in Virginia, his main goal to seize arms the U.S stored there. He wasnt at all sucessful, he got swarmed by U.S marines. He also thought that the enslaved africans might join him in a revolt.
