President Kennedy believed in the "Domino Theory" that required Communism to be contained in every instance. Therefore in his first speech on becoming president, Kennedy made it clear that he would continue the policy of the former President, Dwight Eisenhower, and support the government of Diem in South Vietnam.
President Kennedy sent over a small number of military advisors to South Vietnam to assist them in planning their defense against the invasion by North Vietnam. Under President Johnson, this military involvement became progressively larger. No one really knows what Kennedy would have done, had he not been assassinated.
He tried to back out of the war leaving an anti-communist imprssion but was assasinated before he could succeed.
President Kennedy authorized the "Green Beret" (Special Forces), and sent them to Vietnam in 1961.
Kennedy started sending military advisers there to help with the freedom fighters and train them. Johnson was too indecisive as to what our role was their after Kennedy's death.
