King Phillip was the English name given to Metacom, the leader of the Pokanoket tribe and of the Wampanoag Confederacy in 1662 who were under pressure by Colonial expansion. His war with the New England colonies began when three members of his tribe were convicted of murder and hanged on 8 June 1675. In retaliation settlers at Swansea in Plymouth Colony were attacked and killed.

In a counter move the Indian Village at present day Bristol, Rhode Island was destroyed. New England Colonists at the time totalled about 80,000 people and the Native American population is estimated at 10,500 and war was declared on 9 September 1675. The Colonists lost about 600 people in the next year and Native Americans had 15% of their residents killed.

It is an interesting, rarely presented part of American History with numerous fables and stories of heroism and massacres which included the burning of Providence.
