The point is that, at the time of it's writing, there was a great deal of racial stress and intolerance. The book teaches, however subtly and deeply buried in subtext, the lessons of acceptance and tolerance in racial relationships.

The author's purpose in "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" is to entertain readers through a lively and humorous depiction of the mischievous adventures of a young boy named Tom Sawyer. Mark Twain also uses the novel to provide social commentary on societal norms and values in the American South during the 19th century.

Most of the adventures of tom sawyer recorded in the book really occured... part of his plan (mark twain) has been to try to pleasantly remind adults of what they once were themselves, and how they felt and thought and talked, and what they queer enterprises they sometimes engaged in. Another reason he choose to write this book is because he hated how every other child book was about a perfect boy as he called them "Model Boy" books.

Mark Twain rather famously said "Persons attempting to find a motive in this narrative will be prosecuted; persons attempting to find a moral in it will be banished; persons attempting to find a plot in it will be shot."

Technically he wrote that about the "sequel" (Huckleberry Finn), not about Tom Sawyer, but I think the basic idea holds.
