Before being an independent country, Mexico was a colony of Spain and was called Nueva España (New Spain).

After independence was declared in 1810 the country was referred to as Northern America, Mexican America, Mexican Republic, Mexican Nation and Mexico.

The official name of the country was selected in 1824 and it is Estados Unidos Mexicanos, literally United Mexican States.
