After the October Revolution, Russia became the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic. In December 1922, it joined with Ukraine, Belorussia and the Transcaucasus Federation (Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan) to form the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

In July 1918, Russia adopted the new name the Russian Soviet Federated Socialist Republic. It wasn't until December 1922 that the name "Union of Soviet Socialist Republics" (USSR) was formally adopted.

Russia has had many names during its existence.  During World War II, Russia was referred to as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR).  It was not, however, a member of the axis, but of the allies.
