His first wife was a woman named Louise who died of tuberculosis. He was happy with her, but her mind started going for the last few years of her life. During this time, he fell in love with another woman, Jean, but their relationship was platonic while Louise was alive; they got married about a year after Louise died. Still, some of his friends--especially Louise's relatives--were less than impressed with his relationship with Jean. After his son died, he got very deep into spiritualism and trying to contact people beyond the grave.
