While Adams was president there was an effort made to discredit his presidency. One of the major rifts between Adams and Jefferson was that Jefferson wanted the U.S. to get involved in the French Revolution because France helped out the colonists in their fight for independence. Adams felt that the U.S. was not prepared to go to war so soon after the revolution and that France's revolution was not a fight for liberty. Another issue was that Adams favored a strong federal government while Jefferson preferred having more of a loose confederacy instead of power being concentrated in one place with the federal government having authority over state and local governments. Jefferson's arguments basically was favored by more people since they felt that a federal government with too much power over state government would not be too dissimilar from what they had before the revolution. Another issue was one of personality, Adams was a man with a very bad temper who always seemed to portray himself as a victim, on a personal level he was less likable then Jefferson.
He believed that he offered a revolutionary change from the Federalist regime.

Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States, arranged for the U.S. to purchase the Louisiana Territories from Napoleon of France in 1803.The purchase doubled the size of the United States, giving it both sides of the Mississippi River and the entire Missouri River Valley. The acquisition of the Port of New Orleans was extremely strategic for the security and development of those western territories. In fact, Jefferson's main goal in the negotiations that lead up to the purchase had been to secure that port. Jefferson had doubts about the constitutionality of having the federal government buy new territory, but put them aside.
