He served in a variety of governmental positions, as a territorial governor and as a military leader in the War of 1812 and in Indian Wars as the situation demanded He served as a state senator and then in US Congress both as a representative and a senator, He was ambassador to Columbia for a couple of years. He may have done a little farming between government jobs.
